Tympanoplasty Surgery
Middle ear and eardrum surgeries are called “tympanoplasty”. In health problems such as eardrum perforations, chronic middle ear disorders; It is possible to repair the eardrum and middle ear hearing system with tympanoplasty surgery. At the same time, the inflammation in the middle ear and mastoid bone behind the ear can be cleaned with tympanoplasty surgery.
The procedures to be applied during tympanoplasty surgery vary depending on the patient's complaints and ear problems.
In Which Situations Are Middle Ear Operations (Tympanoplasty) Performed?
Perforation of the eardrum (depending on the patient's preference to prevent complications due to recurrent ear discharge and inflammation)
Middle ear inflammation (in recurrent cases that do not go away with the use of antibiotics)
When there are hearing problems that can be corrected with surgery
How is Tympanoplasty Surgery Performed?
While deciding on the surgical technique, factors such as the condition of the disease, the patient's preferences and the patient's ear structure (ear canal, distance of the eardrum, the location of the hole in the eardrum) are taken into consideration.
During the surgery, the incision can be inside the ear canal, behind the ear or inside the ear. Again, this is among the decisions of the specialist physician about which techniques will be more appropriate. For example, in the operation to be performed to repair only a small hole in the eardrum, intervention can be performed through the ear canal without the need for any incision.
What Should Be Considered After the Surgery?
Usually, the patient is discharged after dressing the day after the surgery. However, the duration of discharge also varies depending on the operation performed in the surgery and the condition of the patient.
Postoperative;
Ears should be protected from water (especially in the first 1 month)
Medicines and ear drops prescribed by the physician should be used regularly for as long as the physician recommends.
As much as possible, it should be protected from diseases such as flu, cold and ear blows for 1 month.
Road and especially air travel, which may change the altitude, should be avoided (for the duration recommended by the physician).
As can be seen, it is difficult to talk about approaches that can suit every patient in middle ear surgeries. Although ear disorders are very diverse, the patient's general health status, age, etc. factors must also be taken into account. For this reason, surgical results and post-operative applications also vary. It is very important that the surgeon who will perform the operation evaluates all the factors well, makes a pre-operative analysis and informs the patient about everything.
